Commencement Ceremony Instructions for Graduates
Formal Uniform
Formal uniform is a student uniform reserved for university ceremonies, e.g. new student orientation ceremony, Wai Khru ceremony (the ceremony to salute the teachers), commencement ceremony, including other special occasions designated by the University.
Male Student Formal Uniform

Female Student Formal Uniform

A tucked-in plain white plastic button-front collared blouse with the University’s pin and a navy blue bow tie

Academic Attire for Graduates’ Commencement Ceremony
01. Male Graduate (bachelor's degree, master’s degree and doctoral degree)
Male graduates are required to wear a navy blue suit with a plain white long-sleeved shirt and buttons, NOT made of metal and a navy blue necktie embossed with the University’s emblem OR a dark blue necktie. (Black suit is NOT allowed.) Any male graduate from any affiliated institute is required to wear the uniform representing his faculty/college/institute with dark-colored socks, plain black leather shoes (with no metal embellished ornaments or decorations), and academic attire. Proper hairstyle is required while long nails are prohibited.
02. Female Graduate (bachelor's degree, master’s degree and doctoral degree)
• Female graduates are required to wear a female student uniform with the Mahidol University bow tie, and a dark blue skirt which is not too tight, too long, nor too short to obstruct proper curtsying. (Black skirt is NOT allowed.) Any graduate from any affiliated institute is required to wear the uniform representing her faculty/college/institute with nude tights/hose/stockings, plain black pump shoes, and academic attire. (Stiletto heels are NOT allowed.) Hairstyles with bangs or fringes and accessories, e.g. bracelets, rings, hair ribbons, as well as long nails are NOT allowed. Graduates with pregnancy are required to wear a plain white maternity dress whose length is shorter than the academic gown.
03. Graduates of All Degrees
- Graduates who are civil servants are required to wear a white formal uniform and academic attire.
- Graduates who are army or police officers are required to wear the uniform of home agency/department and an academic cap instead of their army or police cap. In case that graduates have been bestowed the ranks and pending for the royal sword-granting ceremony, an academic cap shall be individually purchased and worn.
- Graduates who are Muslims or Sikhs are NOT required to wear an academic cap.
Graduates, master’s and doctoral, are required to wear academic attire of their degree received. The velvet trim bordering the hood indicates the major field of the study, or faculty/college/institute in which the degree has been earned. For example, graduates who earn the degree from Master of Science Program (Public Health) with a major in Public Health Nursing at the Faculty of Science are required to wear a gown with a gold velvet border lining, not the pink one.
04. Graduates of Higher Graduate Diploma/ Higher Graduate Diploma in Clinical Medical Sciences/ Higher Graduate Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences and Graduate Diploma
- Male graduates are required to wear a navy blue suit with a plain white long-sleeved shirt and front buttons, NOT made of metal, a navy blue necktie with the University’s emblem OR a dark blue necktie, and academic attire of the degree received prior to enrollment in Mahidol University’s graduate diploma program. (Black suit is NOT allowed.) Dark-colored socks, plain black leather shoes (with no metal embellished ornaments or decorations), and proper hairstyle are required while long nails are prohibited.
- Female graduates are required to wear a white collared blouse or shirt with the Mahidol University bow tie, a dark blue skirt which is not too tight, too long, nor too short to obstruct proper curtsying, and academic attire of the degree received prior to enrollment in Mahidol University’s graduate diploma program. (Black skirt is not allowed.) Nude tights/hose/stockings, plain black pump shoes (with no metal embellished ornaments or decorations) are also required. (Stiletto heels are NOT allowed.)
